Intensive-Level Architectural Survey of the Broad Street Historic District presents the first comprehensive, building-by-building documentation of Red Bank’s historic commercial core. Prepared in accordance with New Jersey Historic Preservation Office standards, this survey records, analyzes, and interprets the architectural, historical, and urban development patterns that shaped Broad Street into one of the most intact and significant downtown commercial districts in Monmouth County.Located at the head of navigation on the Navesink River, Broad Street evolved from an early nineteenth-century river port into a regional commercial center serving northeastern Monmouth County. The district reflects this layered history through a cohesive streetscape of one- to four-story masonry buildings dating primarily from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Italianate commercial blocks, Romanesque Revival details, early twentieth-century Classical Revival bank buildings, and later infill structures collectively illustrate the district’s architectural progression and economic growth. The preparation of this survey has been made possible, in part, by public funds from the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund administered by the New Jersey Historic Trust. The Borough of Red Bank and the Red Bank Historic Preservation Commission gratefully acknowledge the Trust’s support, which has made possible the research, documentation, and preparation of this survey.
